📸 How I make money 📸

With the recent publication of my How to start timelapsing for free video, you now have a comprehensive guide to timelapse, hyperlapse, and match-cut photography all on one channel (for free!).

I'm now working on a video series about how I make money with timelapse & hyperlapse photography. Here's a quick overview:

  • Commercial campaigns. We figure out a concept for a brand or event and produce everything from start to finish. This is why I recently founded MVDP Studios.
  • Operator. I'm part of a team, like a camera operator, with a little more specialization. Often deployed at festivals or brand activations.
  • Social media. I promote products to my audience. This is very niche as not a lot of people have a following. It's not something I often love doing but it's part of what pays the bills.
  • Licensing. Every now and then I get a direct inquiry from someone to license one or more of my existing shots they've found online. Rates get calculated based on the intended usage.
  • Contributions. Even more rare is creating educational content for publications like Professional Photo Magazine.

Those are the main five, there are more, but I'll cover them in the upcoming video series.

Industry news

Lumix has introduced new firmware upgrades to the S5II and S5IIX full-frame mirrorless cameras. I own both cameras and use them weekly to capture my timelapse and hyperlapse footage.

They are affordable, high-performing systems with great features built-in for us time warpers. They're also great for photo and videography, here are the new features:

  • Camera-to-cloud integration with Adobe’s Frame.io - Upload from your camera straight to an online platform so your remote editor can start working on your clips as soon as you finish recording.
  • Proxy Video Recording – Record low-bitrate proxy files alongside your high-res files for a quicker post-production process.
  • Enhanced Real-time Autofocus Recognition – Increase the performance of the Phase Hybrid autofocus for people, animal eyes, cars, and motorcycles
  • Enhanced E.I.S. Performance – Get even more stable footage straight out of camera without gimbals or stabilizers with the High mode added to the E-stabilisation (video) function.
  • SH Pre-Burst Shooting – Record bursts before you hit record.

It blows. Let's move on. With the rise of full-frame mirrorless cameras, there has been a notable increase in outlandish lens designs. Think of the Laowa probe lenses, Astrhori shift lenses, Brightin Star ultra-wide lenses, and also the TTArtisan tilt lenses. In this previously unpublished video, I used the very affordable and surprisingly well-built TTArtisan 50mm f1.8 tilt lens to capture the Goodwood Revival in miniature style.
